Ting Rai Beach is a sandy and rocky small beach to the north of Koh Jum with several upmarket resorts including Koh Jum Lodge and Ting Rai Bay Resort. If you want seclusion and a bit of luxury, this is the beach to visit.
Ting Rai beach feels like a secret getaway beach – at the bottom of a steep, jungle-covered cliff lies a large crescent of sand with just a few resorts nestled into the greenery, all spaced out well from one another so it they feel very separate. There are some beautiful, tall and clearly very old banyan trees that form a leafy canopy over the tropical garden area at the base of the cliff, which then runs directly into the beach. It’s got a certain magic to it.
The beach itself is sandy and rocky in places, with a lot of shade from the trees that grow just behind it. If you like to sit on the beach but like to be in the shade, it’s ideal. The ocean view from Ting Rai Beach looks out over Phang Nga Bay and the beach is in a perfect location to witness the amazing Andaman sunsets.
The resorts perch on the cliff-face up behind the beach, so be aware there’s a fair bit of walking up and down steps to get to and from your room. There’s a fairly good conditioned unsealed road that runs along the cliff behind the resorts if you want to go and explore the rest of Koh Jum, but most visitors are happy to stay on Ting Rai Beach throughout their stay and then leave by heading off the beach on the longtail boat out to the waiting Krabi ferry.
Ting Rai Beach Accommodation
There are some great resorts on Ting Rai Beach, each set into the cliffs overlooking the beach and each with their own atmosphere. Koh Jum Resort is an upmarket place with luxury teak villas and more basic bamboo cottages, and next door is the more modest Ting Rai Bay Resort. Further north along the beach is Old Lamp Bungalows, a traditional Thai bungalow setup run by a friendly family.
Separated by a rocky outcrop from the other resorts is Oon Lee Bungalows, which has sizable, quality bungalows and a great restaurant area all built up and down the cliff. It’s been built with a lot of thought and the garden landscaping around the bungalows makes it feel quite special. The size and quality of the rooms makes up for the lack of beach, which is mainly rocks.
How To Get To Ting Rai Beach
To get to the Ting Rai beach, you either arrive by longtail boat straight onto the beach or use the fairly good conditioned unsealed road that runs along the top of the cliff behind the resorts. You can also use the road to go and explore the rest of Koh Jum, but most visitors are happy to stay on Ting Rai Beach throughout their stay, arriving and leaving by longtail out to the Krabi ferry.
